Workshops
F-1 Beginner
This workshop is designed for those new to the field of immigration advising, campuses with a small number of international students, or as a refresher course. The workshop will cover the following topics: DSOs and their role at an institution, immigration documents and visa types, issuing I-20s, record-keeping requirements, maintaining status, changing status, reinstatements, school transfers, and resources.

Assistant Director of International Student and Scholar Services and Outreach, Appalachian State University
Karen Binger Marshall has been the Assistant Director of International Student and Scholar Services and Outreach at Appalachian State University for eight years and loves interacting with international students on a daily basis. Prior to this position, she spent eight years working in international admissions and several years teaching English abroad. She looks forward to connecting with you at the F-1 Beginner workshop!
Courtenay Klauber
Senior Advisor, NC State University
Courtenay Klauber has worked with the Office of International Services at North Carolina State University since 2017. She started as a Graduate Assistant while completing a Master’s in Higher Education Administration and is now a Senior Advisor. Courtenay enjoys working with international students and scholars on immigration topics to help them achieve their academic and career goals. She also enjoys training and mentoring professionals new to the F-1 and J-1 immigration advising world.
J-1 Beginner
This workshop is designed for those new to the field of J-1 immigration advising, campuses with a small number of international students/scholars, or as a refresher course. The workshop will cover the following topics: RO’s/ARO’s and their role at an institution, issuing DS-2019’s, record keeping requirements, maintaining status, health insurance requirements, and resources.

Assistant Director for Data Services & Compliance, UNC Chapel Hill
Trinh Copsey is the Assistant Director for Data Services & Compliance at UNC-Chapel Hill with over a decade of experience in International Student and Scholar Services. In her previous role as Senior International Advisor, she worked primarily with international researchers and faculty to assist with university sponsored immigration-related matters. She is looking forward to connecting with new and existing professionals in the field for the J-1 Beginner training!
Kory Sopko
Senior Advisor, Duke University
Kory Sopko recently joined Duke University as a Senior International Student and Scholar Advisor. Her journey into the world of international education began in 2012 at The University of Chicago working primarily with J-1 Scholars, J-1 Specialist, J-1 Student Interns and H-1B employees. After moving to North Carolina in 2016, she worked at UNC-Chapel Hill before transitioning to North Carolina State University in 2021. During that time, her portfolio expanded to include F-1 and J-1 international students, O-1 employees, P-1B artists, and a few employment-based permanent residence applications. Kory enjoys exchanging knowledge and experience with other professionals in the field and looks forward to building connections during the J-1 Beginner workshop!
F-1 Intermediate
This intermediate-level workshop is designed for DSOs who understand the processes of F-1 student advising and are ready to tackle some of the more complex, or “gray,” situations. Participants will discuss a range of case studies on the topics of DSO responsibilities, travel, transfers, employment, change of status, and reinstatement.

Thor Duryea
Senior Advisor
Thor Duryea is currently serving as an International Student and Scholar Advisor at NC State University, where he has worked since 2021. He works with F-1 students and J-1 students and scholars. He has served on the CPT and OPT teams and is also in charge of the incoming exchange cohorts. Prior to NC State, Thor did academic advising and programming for incoming UNC system international students. Before that, he worked for 6 years teaching and serving as the Study Abroad coordinator at Seoul National University of Education in South Korea.
Amanda Mills
Associate Director for International Student Services, UNC-Chapel Hill
Amanda Mills is currently the Associate Director for International Student Services at UNC-Chapel Hill. She has worked at UNC’s International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) for 18 years and has had 5 different roles. She enjoys working with F-1 and J-1 students and advising them on their immigration related questions. In addition, Amanda loves meeting and training colleagues who are new to the field of international education. She has also served on the board of NCAIE as the ISSS representative and is currently the Past-Chair after having served as the Chair of NCAIE last year.
