Workshops

F-1 Beginner

This workshop is designed for those new to the field of immigration advising, campuses with a small number of international students, or as a refresher course. The workshop will cover the following topics: DSOs and their role at an institution, immigration documents and visa types, issuing I-20s, record-keeping requirements, maintaining status, changing status, reinstatements, school transfers, and resources.

Karen Binger Marshall

Assistant Director of International Student and Scholar Services and Outreach, Appalachian State University

Karen Binger Marshall has been the Assistant Director of International Student and Scholar Services and Outreach at Appalachian State University for eight years and loves interacting with international students on a daily basis. Prior to this position, she spent eight years working in international admissions and several years teaching English abroad. She looks forward to connecting with you at the F-1 Beginner workshop!

Iryn McIntyre

International Student Advisor, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill

Iryn McIntyre is an international student advisor at UNC Chapel Hill. She has been in her role at UNC for a year and a half, but in the field of international education for more than 12 years. Iryn has worked in admissions and advising at a number of higher education institutions in Boston, Massachusetts, most recently Emerson College and Harvard Summer School. Originally from Ukraine, Iryn herself had experience navigating the immigration regulations being an international student in the US, which inspired her to devote her career to international education. Iryn is looking forward to connecting with you at the upcoming workshop!

F-1 Intermediate

This intermediate-level workshop is designed for DSOs who understand the processes of F-1 student advising and are ready to tackle some of the more complex, or “gray,” situations. Participants will discuss a range of case studies on the topics of DSO responsibilities, travel, transfers, employment, change of status, and reinstatement.

Courtenay Klauber

Senior Advisor, Office of International Services, North Carolina State University

Courtenay Klauber has worked with the Office of International Services at North Carolina State University since 2017. She started as a Graduate Assistant while completing a Master’s in Higher Education Administration and is now a Senior Advisor. Courtenay enjoys working with international students and scholars on immigration topics to help them achieve their academic and career goals. She also enjoys training and mentoring professionals new to the F-1 and J-1 immigration advising world.

Dr. Deborah McLeod Vasquez

Interim Director of International Education Programs, PDSO/RO, Fayetteville State University

Dr. Deborah McLeod Vasquez, PDSO/RO is the Interim Director of International Education Programs at Fayetteville State University. She has been in this role for a year and a half.  Deborah served as the International Student Advisor and Study Abroad Advisor at Fayetteville State for 13 years.  She also served in the capacity of a Career Counselor in the Office Career Services at FSU for 8 years.  Deborah obtained her bachelor’s degree from NCCU, and her master’s from Liberty University, and just recently completed her Ed.D. from FSU in May.  Deborah has traveled abroad to Beijn, China.
