F-1 Beginner

This workshop is designed for those new to the field of immigration advising, campuses with a small number of international students, or as a refresher course. The workshop will cover the following topics: DSOs and their role at an institution, immigration documents and visa types, issuing I-20s, record keeping requirements, maintaining status, changing status, reinstatements, school transfers, and resources.

Karen Binger Marshall

Assistant Director of International Student and Scholar Services and Outreach, Appalachian State University

Karen Binger Marshall has been the Assistant Director of International Student and Scholar Services and Outreach at Appalachian State University for eight years and loves interacting with international students on a daily basis. Prior to this position, she spent eight years working in international admissions and several years teaching English abroad. She looks forward to connecting with you at the F-1 Beginner workshop!

Kristen Aquilino

Director of International Student Services, Elon University

Kristen Aquilino serves as Director of International Student Services at Elon University. In this role, alongside her colleagues, Kristen works to support the international community and enjoys the learning that takes place every step of the way. This encompasses everything from visa and immigration advising to the mentorship and advocacy work involved in international student services. Her responsibilities also include aligning institutional resources with ISSS efforts to integrate knowledge and support from across the university. ISSS is work that thrives with community understanding and participation. She’s excited to engage in that community with the F-1 Beginner training!

F-1 Intermediate

This intermediate level workshop is designed for DSOs who understand the processes of F-1 student advising and are ready to tackle some of the more complex, or “gray,” situations. Participants will discuss a range of case studies on the topics of DSO responsibilities, travel, transfers, employment, change of status, and reinstatement.

Jennifer Glass

Assistant Director of International Programs, Meredith College

Jennifer Glass is currently serving as Assistant Director of International Programs at Meredith College. Her primary duties include immigration advising, student development programming and teaching, and advocacy and support for students of any international background. Before coming to Meredith, Jennifer advised, supported and learned from the international communities at the University of Missouri, Davidson College, California College of the Arts and NC State University.

Thor Duryea

International Student and Scholar Advisor, North Carolina State University

Thor Duryea is currently serving as an International Student and Scholar Advisor at NC State University, where he has worked since 2021. He works with F-1 students and J-1 students and scholars. He has served on the CPT and OPT teams and is also in charge of the incoming exchange cohorts. Prior to NC State, Thor did academic advising and programming for incoming UNC system international students. Before that, he worked for 6 years teaching and serving as the Study Abroad coordinator at Seoul National University of Education in South Korea.

J-1 Beginner

This workshop is designed for those new to the field of J-1 immigration advising, campuses with a small number of international students/scholars, or as a refresher course. The workshop will cover the following topics: RO’s/ARO’s and their role at an institution, issuing DS-2019’s, record keeping requirements, maintaining status, health insurance requirements, and resources.

Courtenay Klauber

Senior Advisor, Office of International Services, North Carolina State University

Courtenay Klauber has worked with the Office of International Services at North Carolina State University since 2017. She started as a Graduate Assistant while completing a Master’s in Higher Education Administration and is now a Senior Advisor. Courtenay enjoys working with international students and scholars on immigration topics to help them achieve their academic and career goals. She also enjoys training and mentoring professionals new to the F-1 and J-1 immigration advising world.

Trinh Copsey

International Scholar Advisor, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill

Trinh Copsey is an International Scholar Advisor at UNC-Chapel Hill with over a decade of experience in International Student and Scholar Services. In her current role, she works primarily with international researchers and faculty to assist with university sponsored immigration-related matters. She is looking forward to connecting with new and existing professionals in the field for the J-1 Beginner training!

Efficient & Effective Advising–Providing Parity in Decision-Making

International Higher Education professionals spend a lot of time learning regulations, rules, policies, procedures, and best practices but spend less time honing how to communicate this information to the students, faculty, and other populations in a manner that encourages parity in the process. This session is for all international education professionals looking to improve the quality and delivery of information, advice, and guidance that allows the decision-maker to be actively involved in the decisions. It will include service delivery in advising sessions, intentional use of various communication methods and media, skills for advisers, and guidelines for service personally and in a wider context.

Chris Ferguson

Assistant Director of Global Education, High Point University

Chris is an experienced international higher education professional skilled in experiential education, program management, and student advising. He has worked principally in education abroad and is now the Assistant Director of Global Education and PDSO at High Point University, managing International Student Programs and Services. He serves as a Title IX Advisor and Title IX Hearing Board Decision Maker, and has experience using the principles of andragogy, experiential education, IAG Advising Service, and instructional design in his practice in college-student advising.
